Are functional mushrooms legal?
All the functional mushrooms we use are completely legal, safe, and widely recognized for their health benefits. You can easily find them in stores across Canada, and they are well-known to Health Canada for their traditional and modern uses. None of these mushrooms are psychoactive, making them a natural and healthy choice.
What is our extraction process?
Raw mushrooms aren’t digestible in their natural state, so to unlock their incredible nutritional benefits, like polysaccharides and triterpenes, they need to be extracted.
Here’s the science: mushrooms contain a tough compound in their cell walls called chitin. It’s the same substance found in crab and shrimp shells, making it extremely hard for our bodies to break down. Think of chitin as a locked door. Behind that door are all the amazing nutrients mushrooms have to offer, but without unlocking it, your body simply can’t access them.
That’s where the extraction process comes in. All the functional mushrooms in our products go through both hot water and alcohol extraction methods to ensure we’re getting the full range of nutrients from each species. Afterward, the extract is spray-dried into a convenient powder, making it easy to use in both hot and cold drinks.

Do you test your coffee for mold and mycotoxins?
Yes, we do! Providing you with the safest, cleanest, and highest-quality products is our top priority. That’s why all our products, including coffee, undergo rigorous testing in third-party laboratories. These tests check for mold, mycotoxins, heavy metals.
Do your mushroom products contain fruiting body or mycelium?
The functional mushroom industry can be a bit confusing at times, as many products marketed as "mushrooms" are actually not mushrooms at all. Instead, they are often mycelium—the root-like structure of the mushroom—grown on grain. At The Youth Effect, we believe in offering the purest ingredients from nature. That means we use the actual mushroom, or fruiting body, in our products.
Let us explain why:
For thousands of years, cultures worldwide have exclusively used the fruiting body of mushrooms. This is the part traditionally consumed for its health benefits. While research on mycelium is still developing, studies have shown that fruiting bodies contain up to 15 times more active compounds (such as beta-glucans, triterpenes, and ergosterol) than mycelium.
Many products containing mycelium actually consist of mycelium grown on grain, where the grain makes up a large portion of the final product. In fact, if a product is made from mycelium, the FDA doesn't even allow it to be labeled as "mushroom."
Using the fruiting body is more expensive, time-consuming, and can be quite bitter in its pure form, but we choose to do this because we want to bring you the highest-quality, most effective mushrooms. This approach is rooted in both centuries of tradition and solid scientific research.
Are your products vegan and gluten-free?
Yes, all of our products are completely vegan and gluten-free! None of our ingredients contain gluten or come from animal sources.
Are there any allergens I should be aware of?
We take allergen safety seriously and are committed to providing our customers with clear, reliable information.
While our mushroom coffee specifically do not contain the eight major allergens recognized by the FDA, such as milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, peanuts, wheat, or soy, some of our products, particularly our lattes, do contain tree nuts. Additionally, our products are processed in a facility that handles tree nuts. We take all necessary precautions to prevent cross-contamination, including thorough cleaning and sanitizing of our equipment. However, if you have a severe allergy, we recommend consulting with your healthcare provider before consuming any of our products.
